Overview
The ENTJ and the ENFP both run on Extraverted Thinking and Introverted Feeling, but the Commander leads with Te and holds Fi as a quiet tertiary value system, while the Campaigner leads with Ne and Fi and keeps Te as a tertiary tool for organizing ideas into action. Practically, this means the ENTJ moves first through structure and efficiency and only later checks whether a plan matches personal values, while the ENFP moves first through possibility and personal meaning and only later organizes it into something executable. Both score high on Extraversion and high on Openness (the Intuitive preference), which gives the relationship real energy and momentum, but their attitude toward structure diverges sharply: the ENTJ's high Conscientiousness (Judging) wants a decided plan, while the ENFP's lower Conscientiousness (Perceiving) wants to keep options open as long as possible.

The Commander communicates directly and with clear intent to decide and move forward, while the Campaigner communicates expansively, following threads of possibility and often thinking out loud before reaching a conclusion. Early on this can be exciting: the ENTJ is drawn to the ENFP's creative range, and the ENFP is drawn to the ENTJ's decisiveness and drive. Over time, the ENTJ's push toward closure can feel to the ENFP like their ideas are being cut off before fully explored, while the ENFP's open-ended enthusiasm can read to the ENTJ as a lack of commitment or follow-through.

The central friction is pace toward decision: the ENTJ's auxiliary Introverted Intuition converges quickly on a single best path and wants to execute it, while the ENFP's dominant Extraverted Intuition keeps generating alternatives even after a decision has technically been made. Because both keep Introverted Feeling somewhere active in the stack (tertiary for the ENTJ, dominant for the ENFP), personal values matter to both, but the ENTJ's is far quieter and easier to override under pressure to perform, which can leave the ENFP feeling that the ENTJ's stated priorities and actual behavior don't match.

Growth comes from the ENTJ deliberately pausing to voice the Fi-driven "does this actually matter to me" question before committing to a plan, rather than letting Te momentum decide it alone, and from the ENFP practicing converting enthusiasm into a stated commitment the ENTJ can actually rely on. Because both carry a Sensing function in a less-developed position (tertiary Se for the ENTJ, inferior Si for the ENFP), grounding big decisions in concrete, present-tense specifics, not just vision, helps translate their shared energy into something durable.

As partners, the relationship often has real spark and shared ambition, but it holds up best when the ENTJ makes space for the ENFP's need to explore and the ENFP respects the ENTJ's need for a plan they can actually count on.
As Friends
As friends, the Campaigner keeps the Commander's world interesting and unpredictable, while the Commander gives the Campaigner's ideas somewhere concrete to go. The friendship works best when neither pressures the other to match their pace.
