What JungOcean Is
JungOcean (jungocean.com) is a free online personality assessment that blends C.G. Jung's typology theories with the modern, scientifically validated Big Five (OCEAN) model of personality. It maps your responses onto both frameworks so you can explore your cognitive preferences and personality traits side by side.
The Scientific Basis
The Big Five (OCEAN) dimensions used throughout this site are grounded in the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP), an open scientific project widely used in personality psychology research. Jungian typology is treated as a complementary, qualitative lens for describing cognitive preferences and is not itself a clinical or diagnostic instrument.
How the Scoring Works
The Big Five half of a result comes from the Mini-IPIP scales, a short, published measure of the five factors of personality (Donnellan, M. B., Oswald, F. L., Baird, B. M., & Lucas, R. E. (2006). The Mini-IPIP scales: Tiny-yet-effective measures of the Big Five factors of personality. Psychological Assessment, 18(2), 192–203). The underlying item pool these scales are drawn from is maintained as an open scientific resource by Goldberg's International Personality Item Pool. Those questions produce a continuous percentage for each of the five OCEAN traits, with no categorical cutoff involved.
The Jungian half, the four-letter type, is built from this site's own questions, written against the cognitive-function framework Carl Jung set out in Psychological Types (1921). Each of the four letters is decided by a simple majority across five questions for that dichotomy, which is why a close 3-to-2 split can flip on a retake even when the Big Five percentages barely move.
Put plainly: the Big Five side runs on a validated academic instrument, and the Jungian side is JungOcean's own, written from Jung's framework rather than adapted from any third-party inventory. It is a descriptive, self-reflection lens, not a validated psychometric instrument in the way the Big Five scale is.
